The unStack Conference 3.0 is an open source-based conference focused on front-end, backend, and design topics to empower more developers and designers throughout Africa and beyond, featuring world-class speakers and core contributors to the most-used open source projects. The event, which took place on November 6, 2021, at the Silverbird Cinema at the Ikeja City Mall, Lagos, Nigeria, was organized by Adora Nwodo, Ayomide Shodipo, and Kingdom Orjiewuru and was mind-blowing and impactful.

As a developer majorly interested in open source, it was a fantastic introduction to the world of open source and my first contribution to Open Source as a volunteer.

As a volunteer, I helped set up the venue alongside other volunteers, mobilized the guests, and distributed refreshments and logistics.

Speaker Highlights

The conference featured excellent speakers such as;

Mat Velloso, who spoke on the power of culture in morphing productive engineering teams, the importance of working in a healthy environment, and growing as a software engineer;

Samson Goddy, who spoke on the topic "Growing in Open Source." He expatiated the importance of Open Source Software (OSS) to the developer community and how newbies can leverage Open Source to gain hands-on experience working with software and contribute to the developer community. A quote of his, which I could relate to was this;

"Make your growth Open-Source."

He reiterated the impact of community on career growth as a developer or designer and how it is vital to developers and non-developers alike.

Prosper Otemuyiwa introduced us to SourceGraph, a developer's code search and intelligence tool. It lets you search and explore all of your organization's code on the web, with integrations into your existing tools.

Sourcegraph helps you:

  • Find example code
  • Explore/read code (including during a code review)
  • Debug issues
  • Locate a specific piece of code
  • Determine the impact of changes

Sourcegraph makes it faster and easier to perform these tasks for you and everyone else at your organization. Check it out!๐ŸŽ‰

Aniedi Udo-Obong spoke on the Community-as-a-Service (CaaS) model and how collaboration in the tech ecosystem is a win-win for everyone in the community.

Lest I forget our timely and efficient host, Ayomide Shodipo, co-founder at unStack, whose timely interventions and hard work set up this event, big ups!๐ŸŽ‰

These and a few other excellent speakers like;

Ifeoma Nwosu, who showed us how to make HTTP calls in Vue using Axios;

Oluwalana Subomi, introduced getconvoy.io, a Cloud-Native webhook service that ensures reliability and scalability for your webhooks infrastructure;

And a few others graced us with impressive presentations and sessions last Friday for an unforgettable experience.

As a newbie developer in Nigeria, if you're looking to attend your first tech event, then unStack is terrific for starters.

Special thanks to Adora Nwodo, Ayomide Shodipo, and Kingdom Orjiewuru for putting this together.
